I learned a new word this week, I bet it’s one you already know. Have you ever heard of a Sit-Upon?
Since I had never heard that word until Dawn at We Call It Junkin introduced me to her awesome, no-sew tutorial for making them, I had to Google to learn more. Their name says it all because they are just that, something you sit upon.
Per Merriam Webster, a Sit-Upon is a “square or waterproof cloth carried by hikers and campers for sitting on wet ground.” Apparently, they are really popular with girl scouts, too which makes sense since they do a lot of hiking and camping.
Sit-Upons can also make that hard garden bench or lawn chair a lot more cushy which is how Dawn is using her’s in this picture below. Forget making them square, these are way cuter! They would be great to take along on a picnic or a concert in the park.
This is a no-sew project so if you don’t sew, no problem! You can still easily make this denim project.
I love how Dawn’s turned out…the fabric belt adds extra style and fun!
You’ll find Dawn’s detailed tutorial to make you own cushy Sit-Upon at her blog here: Make a Sit-Upon from Old Jeans.
I guess I’m dating myself here, but I do remember the “situpon.” A Life magazine sandwiched between two pieces of oil cloth and whip stitched all around. It was a Girl Scout project and came in quite handy when we’d sit on rocky ground at our campsite.
Pattie, what a fun memory. I love the life magazine part. Those are collectibles today! I remember that magazine vividly. You and I must be around the same age. 🙂
What a cute idea! That’s what I would call a great upcycling project….. Candy
Just wanted to say thanks again for featuring my Sit Upon project. Hopefully a few folks will find it useful. 🙂 I love your new site! Take care – Dawn @ We Call It Junkin.com
Thanks, Dawn! Appreciate you sharing it!
This is my first time hearing that and I love it. My gosh this looks comfy!
